England have been sent packing from the
World Cup of Darts after being thrashed by home heroes, Germany to complete the semi-final line-up in Frankfurt.
It was an 8-3 success for
Martin Schindler and
Gabriel Clemens who defeated Rob Cross and Michael Smith, the top seeds who continue a barren run for England.
Loudly encouraged by the German fans, Clemens and Schindler grabbed an immediate lead. Cross immediately missed two doubles and Schindler threw a 63 finish, followed by a 15-darter from the German to make 2-0. However, Schindler missed three chances to make it 3-0 before Smith threw out 68 for 2-1. However, the English failed to equalise before Clemens managed to make it 3-1.
Then things moved quickly. Via an 11-darter, 74 finish and a 14-darter, the neighbours from the East ran out to a 7-2 lead. Out of nowhere, England took another leg via a fine 10-darter. It turned out to be the last feat, as Clemens then gave Germany the victory.
In the semi-final Germany will play Scotland (Peter Wright and Gary Anderson) on Sunday evening. The other semi-final is between Wales (Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton) and Belgium (Dimitri van den Bergh and Kim Huybrechts).
