Scott Williams has caused a massive upset on Monday night at the Alexandra Palace. In the quarter-finals of the
World Darts Championship. 'Shaggy' sent tournament favourite,
Michael van Gerwen packing 5-3.
This puts Williams in the World Darts Championship semi-finals for the first time in his career. "Words don't describe it. They can do but I'm not allowed to say them on camera," Williams reacted with a smile in his post-match press conference. "Michael is probably the best of our generation so to be here is crazy but he wasn't the Michael van Gerwen you guys have seen over the last two or three games. I don't really care because I beat him!"
As Williams admits, van Gerwen was far from his blistering best but actually, 'Shaggy' saw signs of that in the practice room pre-match. "I could kind of tell when we were bulling up and that in the practice room. He was always just that little bit off constantly," he explains. "But it's not about what he does, it's about my game. I hit the doubles, hit the trebles and I'm through to tomorrow."
With van Gerwen's good friend Vincent van der Voort calling Williams an 'easy draw', did the Dutchman underestimate his opponent? "Possibly," admits Williams when asked. "But at the same time, he knew he wouldn't get an easy game from me. I give it back to him. People are scared of him on that stage, they genuinely don't like playing him because he's such a threat but I wasn't going to let that happen."
The 33-year-old Englishman will take on Luke Humphries in the semi-finals. "Obviously, for me this this format is a little new, but I'm going to enjoy it regardless," he says. Is he dreaming of taking the world title yet? "Nope. Not at all."
