Jonny Clayton has been in poor form since reaching the World Matchplay final with personal issues off the oche. But he still prevailed over Steve Lennon 3-1 in sets at the PDC
World Darts Championship.
Together Clayton and Lennon missed as many as 62 doubles in seventeen legs and despite berating his own display, Clayton was happy to get through.
"It's a massive win. I've not played well for probably the second half of the season. I'm not going to lie I was nervous coming into this and I got over the line. I started off scoring well but just couldn't hit the outer ring.
"No disrespect to Steve but Steve missed a lot of doubles but I had chances as well. I'm happy to get over the line."
"I know I'm better than that. I know Steve is better than that so it's a game to forget. If I play like that again, I don't think I get through."
Speaking on his recent form, he even said he is bringing back a tactic he usually doesn't employ as he has his heart set on returning to the top.
"It's not been brilliant. I'm on the practice board and that's not something I do. I'm on it, I want to be back to what I can do and that's not what I can do. Crossed fingers I turn up next time. I've proven I'm better than this and hopefully I can show it."
