With the second round of the World Darts Championship now over, 64 of the 96 World Darts Championship participants have already been eliminated. Some of the eliminated participants are already certain of losing their status as professional darts players.
Players who have a PDC TourCard will have two years to secure a position in the top-64 of the world rankings. If a player falls out of the top-64 after that period, that player must return to Q-School to try to earn back his Tour Card.
Mario Vandenbogaerde had to win his first match at this edition of the World Darts Championship to secure his Tour Card. The Belgian finished just outside the top 64 in the world this season and thus seems certain to lose his professional status.
Radek Szaganski took his first PDC title this year by beating Englishman Connor Scutt in the final of Players Championship 27. The Pole needed to reach the third round at the World Darts Championship to retain his Tour Card, but fell short in his second match against Raymond van Barneveld, which he lost 3-1 in sets.
Connor Scutt made his first PDC ranking final this year, forcing his debut at the World Darts Championship. The Englishman managed to win his first match against Krzysztof Kciuk 3-0 in sets, but then lost himself 3-0 in sets to Gerwyn Price in the second round. This defeat left Scutt just short of extending his status as a professional dart player. His opponent in the first round, Krzysztof Kciuk, is also already certain of losing his Tour Card.
Jules van Dongen managed to seal his debut for the World Darts Championship via the Pro Tour in his second Tour Card year but needed a good run at the World Darts Championship to secure his Tour Card. However, the Dutch American was immediately eliminated by Australian Darren Penhall.
Darren Webster and Rusty-Jake Rodriguez both managed to qualify for this edition of the World Darts Championship at the last minute via the PDPA qualifying tournament. However, they were both eliminated immediately by Cameron Menzies and Niels Zonneveld respectively.
Steve Lennon is after his elimination in the second round at this edition of the World Darts Championship is on place 65, but will probably keep his Tour Card because Martijn Kleermaker will hand in his Tour Card in January. Only Richard Veenstra (quarterfinals), Berry van Peer (semifinals), Jeffrey de Graaf (semifinals) and Luke Littler (semifinals) can keep Lennon off keeping his Tour Card.
