Rob Cross has shown in recent weeks why he belongs to the world top, with a spectacular nine darter and an impressive 170 finish in the Premier League Darts. Still, the world number four is mostly frustrated, as he has not yet managed a weekly title.
Thursday night in Newcastle, Cross, along with Luke Humphries and Luke Littler, will receive a special gold dart from main sponsor BetMGM. This is a reward for throwing a perfect leg in the tournament. But while the award is a nice recognition, the former world champion remains dissatisfied.
Before his quarterfinal duel with Gerwyn Price, Cross spoke candidly about his feelings. “I’ve not even seen a picture of the golden darts so it will be a surprise for me as everyone else. I’ve just got to make sure I don’t drop them before I play!
But much rather than a trophy, he just wants to win a Premier League night once. "To be honest, I want to just win a night now. I’m doing all the sexy darts stuff but not staying consistent after that. To hit a nine and then the Big Fish and not win on the night is annoying. I’m pig-sick of it to be honest."
Despite his strong play in recent weeks, the Englishman is critical of himself. ''My form has been brilliant lately but I want something to show for it.
“It’s nice to do the big moments and send the crowds wild. I love that, it’s what playing the game is all about. But I want to win nights, I want to get up the league table. No one will remember the nine and 170 if I don’t make finals night at the O2.”
Cross is currently in fifth place in the Premier League, two points behind Price. That makes their duel in Newcastle extra important in the fight for a spot among the top four.
“It is frustrating because I need to get that night win to push me into the top four.
“Gerwyn has been playing really well, at times better than anyone else so I’ll need to hit the ground running.
“He’ll be so fired-up. To be fair there’s no easy matches. It’s just making sure the best version of me turns up. I’m my own worst enemy!”
