Luke Humphries is in the semi-finals of the
World Darts Championship for the first time in his career. 'Cool Hand Luke' was too strong for Dave Chisnall, comfortably winning 5-1 in the quarter-finals on Monday night.
Humphries and Chisnall split the first two sets neatly between them, but then Humphries steamed through to a 5-1 victory. "It does feel really good. What I really wanted this year was to make the next stepping stone after being a three-time quarter-finalist. I wanted to be known as a semi-finalist at least," he says in his post-match press conference.
With the likes of Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith and Peter Wright all having been eliminated, the tournament is incredibly open. "The draw has been blown wide open so it's a massive opportunity for someone now to be world champion or two-time world champion if it's Rob Cross so I'm excited to see how it pans out."
Humphries will take on Scott Williams in the semi-finals after 'Shaggy' shockingly dispatched van Gerwen 5-3 in the quarter-finals. "You can't discredit him because he showed a lot of bottle and he played fantastic. I think that the better player won and it's important not to say too much because it always seems to bite you in the bum."
The 28-year-old Englishman put in his best performance of the tournament so far against Chisnall, averaging 103.50. "I think I needed to do that because if you keep not playing to the best of your ability, then confidence-wise, you'll start getting thoughts in your mind like 'can I be world champion?'"
"But playing like that, it gives me more confidence and belief that it's a possibility now," he analyses. "It's going to be really hard, but like I say all the time, I really look forward to seeing how it goes and I feel really relaxed."
