Nathan Aspinall has made a name for himself on the darting scene. A two-time major champion and a regular in the Premier League Darts over the years, his name also comes with the iconic walk-on song Mr. Brightside by The Killers. While the song is hugely popular with fans, it is not a secret that 'The Asp' despises it and wishes to ditch it in his final year on tour.

This may come as a surprise with him constantly lambasting the track that has become synonymous with him. Blasted around the biggest arenas and stadiums, he has conducted thousands of people at a time ahead of competing on the oche as the crowd sing the iconic tune at the top of their lungs.

"I will change it to Lose Yourself"

He spoke on the iconic song on the Double Tops Podcast, admitting that he was the reason the song was still a hit on the charts. “I’ve kept him in the top 40 for the last 10 years. You know what I mean?" he joked.
“I might be called Nathan Aspinall, but I walk down the street and, oh, Mr. Brightside. It grates on me. Everyone absolutely loves it and it’s part of the darts now."
He admitted that there were certain darts players with walk-on songs that just could not be changed. “I think there’s certain walk-ons that are iconic. Obviously, Michael’s, Phil’s, Barney’s, Gary Anderson, Adrian Lewis, there’s certain ones that you can never change."
He named a famous Eminem track as to what he would change it to come the final year of his career. "I can’t change it until it’s my final year, and I will change it to Lose Yourself. Yeah, a million percent.”

He has used the song before. Enroute to winning the German Darts Grand Prix earlier this year, he experimented with it ahead of his semi-final clash against Kevin Doets. He also made the switch last year in the first round of the German Darts Championship in a comfortable 6-3 first-round victory over Maximilian Czerwinski.

Financial security over trophies

The conversation turned to his overall motivation in darts. While many players compete for the titles and accolades, money and fortune is Aspinall's overall aim as he looks to provide for his family.
"I don’t care about trophies," he admitted. “I do this game because it’s my job and I don’t ever want my kids or me to have to ever worry about money.

He emphasised how little he cared about lifting the trophy at the end of a tournament, but would still be happy to clinch more glory. “Honest to god, I couldn’t care less about the trophies. Of course, I want to win tournaments and I’ll be buzzing to add another trophy to my trophy cabinet. But, for me, it’s very much a case of trying to make as much money as I possibly can over the next 10 years.”
