Michael van Gerwen cannot be there when the PDC hosts its first tournament in Switzerland. 'Mighty Mike' reports on his socials that he will be unable to compete in the 2024
Swiss Darts Trophy this weekend due to illness.
''Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the Swiss Darts Trophy this weekend as I’m not feeling well," the Dutchman confirms. "Not the news I wanted, but health comes first. I'll be back stronger soon!"
Last week the 35-year-old from the Netherlands won the Hungarian Darts Trophy. In Budapest, Van Gerwen won a Euro Tour tournament for the first time in sixteen months. He defeated consecutively Martin Lukeman (6-2), Gabriel Clemens (6-2), Josh Rock (6-4), Ross Smith (7-3) and Gian van Veen (8-7) to capture the title.
Then on Tuesday and Wednesday, Van Gerwen was expected in Leicester, England, to play two Players Championship tournaments there. The three-time world champion had therefore also boarded a plane for the United Kingdom on Monday. Van Gerwen fell ill there, however, and had to withdraw from both Players Championship tournaments.
Three more Players Championship tournaments are scheduled for next week, although Van Gerwen previously hinted that it was not in his schedule to participate in them. The next big date is the World Grand Prix, which takes place in Leicester from Oct. 7 to 13.
