No tournament was probably suited to
Phil Taylor better than the
World Matchplay. 'The Power' competed 24 times in Blackpool and was the strongest at the end no fewer than 16 times.
Zooming in on that statistic, we see that Taylor has played 107 matches at the
World Matchplay. Of those, no fewer than 99 were wins, compared to only eight defeats.
Dizzying numbers, but the 62-year-old darts legend has another statistic at the
World Matchplay that no one can match. The 16-time world champion is the only player in World Matchplay history to win a tournament with only averages above 100.
In fact, the Englishman did so three times; in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Especially his 2010 participation was unmatched with a tournament average of 106.31. That year, Taylor recorded averages of 105.16, 103.81, 102.94, 104.60 and 114.99.
