Darts legend Phil Taylor has hinted that a return to competitive darts is still not completely off the table. 'The Power,' who recently underwent hip surgery, had to withdraw from the World Seniors Masters in November, which was supposed to be his official farewell tournament.
Despite this setback, Taylor remained closely involved in the sport as an analyst and ambassador for the World Seniors Tour and the MODUS Super Series. Although the 16-time world champion officially announced his retirement, he admitted that the farewell was hard on him.
Speaking with Reach, Taylor spoke candidly about his retirement. "It was a bit sad, like an end of an era. It’d been my job for 40 years and, all of a sudden, I couldn’t do it.
However, he admits that there is also a certain relief now that he no longer feels the pressure to perform. “So I was a little bit sad but all a bit relieved because I haven’t got any pressure on me anymore now.”
With his new hip and improved vision thanks to laser surgery, Taylor is physically in better shape than before. Still, back pain remains a major concern, something that could hinder his possible comeback.
When asked if he will ever return to the stage, "The Power" is cautious. “I don’t think so. I went to see a specialist recently about my back. Then I’ve got to go for an MRI [scan]."
Taylor experiences daily pain in his lower back and first wants to find out if anything can be done about it. “My back is hurting me all the time. I’m going to get it checked out and see what the crack is. And if they can repair it, I might be able to do a bit more.
The 63-year-old dart legend especially lacks the ability to stay fit. “I want to be able to go to the gym and lift a few weights. But at the minute, if I bend down, it’s killing me. It’s old age unfortunately! I’ve had my lenses done, got a new hip, I just need to get my back sorted. Everything else is working.”
