Remember Night Seven of the Premier League Darts? It feels like it was just yesterday...
Oh, that's right. It was. The Milton Keynes omnibus got off to an intriguing start on Tuesday. The series of results in that first night of play means we have a relegation battle on our hands. Only three players are guaranteed Premier League participation beyond Judgement Night; another three are firmly in the elimination mix.
Of of the at-risk trio is
Gerwyn Price, who'll be bitterly disappointed with that fact. After a poor debut year, and last year's narrow play-off miss, the aim was the top four. Now he needs to better
Daryl Gurney or
Rob Cross' results to stay alive. The Welshman was wasteful against
Nathan Aspinall, letting a decent position slip away.
Meanwhile,
Gary Anderson made a mockery of fears that post-lockdown
Premier League Darts wouldn't have the regular sparkle. The Flying Scotsman belied his own 2020 form by blowing the roof off the Marshall Arena, squashing any lingering threat of being dragged down the table. Winning here would strengthen his bid for the top four, as well as giving some handy momentum ahead of a Thursday night clash with
Michael van Gerwen.
Gurney's great escape?
Daryl Gurney couldn't have had much of a better Tuesday. Rob Cross and
Gerwyn Price lost, while Superchin won, narrowing the gap between himself and safety to a mere point. Leg difference looks good too, thanks to a resounding
win over a disappointing Chris Dobey. Gurney didn't need to put in a top performance, and duly didn't. He simply can't get away with that against
Nathan Aspinall, who has averaged well above 90 in each game since the first night.
If Gurney survives, Rob Cross is in prime position to sink into that ninth position. It'd be a hefty fall from grace for last year's runner-up, and yet another meek capitulation against
Michael van Gerwen doesn't support his case.
Michael Smith also lost on Tuesday, but won't linger on it much - he was largely excellent, eclipsed only by a
Gary Anderson masterclass. More of that from Smith, and he'll be likely to secure the win that keeps his Premier League Darts ambitions on track.
Title clash
Is Michael van Gerwen's meeting with
Glen Durrant an early six-pointer in the battle for first place? Mighty Mike has survived close challenges from Raymond van Barneveld,
Peter Wright, Phil Taylor, Rob Cross,
Michael Smith and Dave Chisnall to sit atop every group stage he's been a part of in Premier League Darts seasons past.
His win over Cross edges him ahead of Durrant, but only on leg difference. History suggests that MVG will stay top now he's there, but Duzza has beaten the world number one before, and knows he can do it again. Even his slips - against Fallon Sherrock, Nathan Aspinall and Wright - could've easily been wins. It's in filling in those fine margins where he can topple a defending Premier League champion who isn't at his indomitable best.
World champion
Peter Wright rounds off the day's play, and it's his turn to take on the contender. Today's cameo star is one Wright will recognise from his historic Ally Pally run a mere 15 years ago. Actually, it may have only been nine months - it's hard to tell. Jeffrey de Zwaan was dead in the water in his Last 16 tie with Snakebite, before unleashing his precocious talent to almost seal one of the all-time great comebacks. He'll be a tough challenge for the Scot. Both are aiming to improve on their last Premier League Darts outing; Wright's came yesterday against
Glen Durrant, de Zwaan's over a year ago in Rotterdam against Rob Cross.
