Premier League Darts Night 15 took place in Birmingham and with only Luke Littler and Jonny Clayton currently qualified before the night. Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and Gian van Veen were aiming to complete the top four.
It was Price and Humphries that did so with a week to spare in the weekly roadshow as we do not have the scenario we had last year where Van Gerwen and Aspinall were duking it out. It does mean that MVG misses out for consecutive years.
Humphries faced Gerwyn Price in the weekly final in Birmingham and took it 6-4. Price had already sealed his spot and after a pretty good few weeks, the defending champion Humphries lived up to the pressure.
Price opened with a 180 on the Humphries throw. Humphries missed four darts to hold but Price was no better and 'Cool Hand' hit double 10 to go 1-0 up. Price levelled up with a 64 checkout for 11. But Humphries was straight back with a 42 checkout to go 2-1 up.
He broke throw to go 3-1 up and knew he was three away from The O2. He claimed double nine to go two away. Price cut the gap with a brilliant 130 checkout and as Humphries missed the nine, he hit a single 20 for the first though albeit he set up 62 for his return. But he missed double 16. Price looked at 127 but he missed the bull.
Humphries returned but missed three for the hold and Price looked at double 12 and then double six to break and to go within one. But Price held for 4-4. Humphries was throwing for 5-4 and got it on 47. Drama to end as Price misses 170 and Humphries claims a 117 checkout to win it.
Price sets O2 spot and a dilemma
Gerwyn Price managed to seal his spot at The O2 no matter what happened in the final and joined Luke Littler and Jonny Clayton in claiming his spot. But it also sets a bit of a dilemma as he is also signed up to play the UK Open pool championship again at around the same time.
Of course he is likely to play the Premier League play-offs now he is set in them but it is a question that of course will be asked of 'The Iceman' now. Michael van Gerwen was the talk of the darting world this week as he averaged 122 and won a ProTour albeit he has slipped back to type as he lost to Joe Hunt the day after and was beaten by Price in the opener.
Van Gerwen misses out on the O2 again.
It showed very much that his A game is there but his B and C game as Vincent van der Voort has even said are a bit non existent. To start his tie, Price went 2-1 up with a break and held for 3-1 but MVG was back for 3-2 on double 20. MVG broke back pinning 74 for 3-3 and then 127 on the bull missed but back for double eight from 25. He went 4-3 up as a result. But Price broke back hitting 100 on double 20 with MVG missing double 14 multiple times. Double five sealed it for Price.
He went on to face Gian van Veen who started the night seeing off Josh Rock 6-3. To start, Van Veen hit double 10 to make it 2-1 but eventually Rock came back for double four for 2-2. Van Veen couldn't pin the nine the leg before but he could break going 4-2 up with a 54 checkout. Rock went 4-3 down breaking back with a 121 and was throwing for 4-4. But Van Veen broke again on double eight after he missed 170 and Rock missed 82. Van Veen pinned 51 for 6-3 to win it.
But against Van Veen, the Dutchman started with a 121 but Price hit back with a 74 checkout to make it 1-1. Double 10 was pinned by Van Veen for a 2-1 lead but a 12-darter on double 10 for Van Veen saw him lead 3-2 against Price. Price levelled with a 72 checkout to make it 3-3. A 120 checkout followed for GVV The Giant but Price started his charge hitting a brilliant 109 checkout to make it 4-4. He broke with a 54 checkout following that and then sealed it on double 10.
Humphries' brilliance to beat Littler
While for Humphries, he walloped Stephen Bunting to begin the night 6-0. He broke initially for 2-0 hitting double six and followed that up with a great riposte hitting 44 to go 4-0 up. He then hit double 16 to sweep Bunting for a whitewash and was joined by Littler in the semi's who himself whitewashed his nearest challenger in Jonny Clayton. He broke on double 10 and then hit double 16 to go 2-0 up and then hit 136 to claim the lead and go halfway to victory.
Littler broke again hitting double 10 for 5-0 before hitting 115 to claim it but the tables then turned on Littler as Humphries produced a 110 average to win 6-3. Littler went up 2-0 in the second semi-final but Littler broke again for 3-0 with an 86 checkout only for Humphries to start motoring. Littler missed darts to hold and Humphries broke and held for 4-3. He then hit 98 to break again at 5-3. A win sealed with an 11-darter hitting double 20 for a 60 checkout which set up the aforementioned Price v Humphries showpiece.
