Today in Wigan, England, the 2025 Players Championship season kicks off. It consists of 34 instead of 30 tournaments this year. Today and tomorrow the first two of those will be played out. It will be particularly interesting to see how Gary Anderson can perform this campaign, after returning somewhere close to his very best in 2024.
One of the best players at last year's Players Championships was 'The Flying Scotsman', who won two tournaments and also lost one final. In the process, he registered no less than ten 110+ averages. Since all matches at the Players Championship were registered (for the first time in 2018), no one ever achieved such a slew of high averages than Anderson last year. Partly due to injury, the 54-year-old Scot had a disappointing World Darts Championship and will therefore be keen to perform strongly today and tomorrow at the opening tournament of the 2025 Players Championship.
In second place in this list we find José de Sousa. The Portuguese, who has now seriously dropped down the world rankings, had a top year on the Players Championship circuit in 2021. He then won three Players Championships and recorded a 110+ average no less than six times. De Sousa will desperately need such a performance this year, as another bad year will put his PDC Tour Card in jeopardy.
In shared third place in this list we find Josh Rock and Peter Wright. Rock broke through in 2022 with his first tournament victory at the Players Championship. He also posted five 110+ averages that year. Peter Wright also achieved a 110+ average five times in 2019, but he won no fewer than three Players Championships that year.
After the first two tournaments this week, by the way, the players barely get a rest. After all, at the beginning of next week they are already heading to Rosmalen, where Players Championships 3 and 4 are on the program at the Autotron.
