For the first time at the 2024
World Darts Championship, only second-round matches are scheduled in one session. Among others,
Luke Littler and
Danny Noppert will be in action in London on Thursday night.
Littler will make another appearance at Alexandra Palace a day after his sensational debut. The 16-year-old super talent from England gave away a masterclass on Wednesday against Christian Kist and triumphed 3-0 thanks to an average of 106. It was the highest average by a debutant ever at the World Darts Championship and also made 'The Nuke' the youngest-ever winner of a match at the World Darts Championship. Andrew Gilding could be the next victim of the English prodigy. Gilding drew attention to himself earlier this year by defeating Michael van Gerwen in the final of the UK Open. But will start as the outsider despite being a major champion.
In the second match of the evening it is the turn of Noppert, who became a father for the second time at the end of November. Last time he became a father (February 2022) he managed to win the subsequent major tournament at the UK Open in 2022. A wonderful omen, but then 'The Freeze' will first have to deal with Scott Williams. The Englishman won his first match 3-1 in sets over Haruki Muramatsu. Both players have faced each other four times before on the Pro Tour, three of which were won by the Dutchman.
Gabriel Clemens also starts the World Darts Championship on Thursday night. 'The German Giant' was still in the semi-finals at Alexandra Palace last year, so he takes with him a new set of expectations. Many people expected him to face Gian van Veen, but the Dutch talent was surprisingly defeated in the first round by Asian surprise Man Lok Leung. Thanks to no less than eleven 180 scores he outplayed Van Veen. Should Leung reach that level again, Clemens will have his hands full with the dart player from Hong Kong.
The evening concludes with an encounter between
Damon Heta and Martin Lukeman. The latter defeated Haupai Puha 3-1 in sets in his opening match and now faces another darter from Oceania. For Heta, it will be his fifth World Championship. The past two editions 'The Heat' lost the last 32, a performance that Heta, as number ten in the world, owes it to his standing to improve this year.
