Berry van Peer fell down stairs ahead of World Championship debut: ''With two bruised ribs almost couldn't practice"

Berry van Peer triumphed in his debut at the World Darts Championship on Thursday afternoon by beating Luke Woodhouse 3-2 in sets. Especially the finishes were excellent for 'Bionic', who recorded a double percentage of 48 percent.

Van Peer had a special explanation for that afterwards at Viaplay. "I did a couple of double throws with my manager before I had to throw," the 27-year-old explained. "I never actually did that, but we're going to continue that, I guess."

Van Peer had chances to decide the match already in four sets, but his two match darts in the fourth set were missed. Then he still sealed it in the deciding set. "A win is nice, but it was a tense match. Very close. But I'm very happy to have won,'' Van Peer said.

After Van Peer finished his interview at Viaplay, he told AD.nl that he was still struggling with physical discomfort ahead of the World Darts Championship. ''I fell down the stairs at home last Tuesday. As a result, I have hardly been able to practice. I have two bruised ribs, but I can't complain. In terms of darts, it's not too bad, but if I have to pick up a dart, it hurts a lot. But I feel fine."

Van Peer, however, proved fit enough to perform a special dance after his victory. ''Yes, the griddy,'' Van Peer explained with a laugh. ''That's from FIFA. My best buddy was in the audience. We always play FIFA and I promised I would. Because no matter what score, we always celebrate our goals with the griddy. From the walk-on to the end, I'm nice and energetic. That helps me. I can use a little adrenaline, I just like that. Even at the most beautiful tournament, like the World Championship,'' Van Peer concluded.
