Eight contenders remain for the title at the
World Grand Prix. Friday night they will be in action during the quarterfinals of the double-in double-out tournament to compete for a spot in the final four.
With the elimination of Michael van Gerwen,
Gerwyn Price is the only remaining player who has already won the tournament once. After wins over Danny Noppert and Krzysztof Ratajski, Price will play Martin Schindler on Friday night. With victories over Raymond van Barneveld and Stephen Bunting, the latter became the first German ever to reach the last eight of the World Grand Prix.
Michael Smith himself achieved a personal milestone by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in his career after wins over Callan Rydz and Brendan Dolan. 'Bullyboy' now faces off with Andrew Gilding, who eliminated Rob Cross and Gary Anderson.
On the other side of the tournament schedule,
Peter Wright will face off with Luke Humphries. Wright won over Gabriel Clemens and Ryan Searle in his two previous rounds, while Humphries picked up wins against Daryl Gurney and Luke Woodhouse. The final quarterfinal will be a clash between Joe Cullen and Chris Dobey. The latter was responsible for the elimination of Michael van Gerwen, after being too strong for Dimitri van den Bergh earlier. Cullen made it to the quarterfinals with victories over Mike de Decker and Ross Smith.
How can I watch the World Grand Prix on TV?
The event will be broadcast in its entirety by Sky Sports. The first two tournament days start at 6 p.m.. Then there are three tournament days starting at 19:00 before the sessions on the final weekend start at 20:00.
How much prize money is there to earn?
The prize fund includes £600,000 in prize money. This makes the prize fund now almost sixteen times larger than when the tournament started in 1998. Back then, "only" £38,000 was made available by the PDC.
All participants will receive 7,500 pounds of prize money credited to their ranking anyway. This amount can eventually add up to a grand prize of £120,000 for the winner of the tournament.
