A dramatic Sunday afternoon session at the Swiss Darts Trophy in Basel saw several big names book their spots in the quarter-finals — with Raymond van Barneveld, Jonny Clayton and Ryan Searle among the standout performers.
Five-time world champion Van Barneveld delivered a commanding whitewash over Ritchie Edhouse, securing a crucial win to seal qualification for next month’s World Grand Prix. Edhouse, who needed victory to stay in the race for the European Championship, struggled under pressure and averaged just 83.41. Van Barneveld capitalised with a composed display, averaging 88.41 and sealing the 6–0 victory with back-to-back legs of 15 and 14 darts.
The Dutchman will face Stephen Bunting in the last eight after ‘The Bullet’ saw off Krzysztof Ratajski 6–3 in solid fashion.
Jonny Clayton was another standout performer of the session. The Welshman ended the title defence of Martin Schindler with a 6–3 victory that featured finishes of 151 and 10 darts. ‘The Ferret’ flew out of the gates with legs of 11 and 15 darts and maintained control throughout, despite a 120 checkout from Schindler keeping things tight early on. Clayton now faces Cor Dekker in Sunday night’s quarter-finals.
Dekker produced one of the session’s biggest shocks, edging out Chris Dobey in a high-quality 6–5 thriller. Despite Dobey averaging 106.99 and hitting seven 180s, the Norwegian-born Dutchman held his nerve in a last-leg decider, pinning a superb 127 checkout to clinch the win. It marks Dekker’s first-ever Euro Tour quarter-final appearance.
Ryan Searle also impressed, knocking out world number one Luke Humphries 6–4 to reach the last eight. Searle, who was a finalist in Basel last year, held firm in a closely contested encounter to set up a meeting with Luke Woodhouse. Woodhouse earlier dispatched Jermaine Wattimena 6–2, punishing the Dutchman’s missed doubles with clinical finishing, including checkouts of 108 and 93.
Gian van Veen also advanced to the quarter-finals, comfortably beating Ryan Joyce 6–2. ‘The Giant’ capitalised on a string of missed doubles from ‘Relentless’, pulling away with a composed mid-match surge and closing out the contest with a 13-darter.
The final spot in the last eight was claimed by Rob Cross, who narrowly denied Danny Noppert in a nail-biting decider. Noppert rallied from 5–3 down but missed a match dart on tops, allowing Cross to take out 68 and move through.
