For many professional darts players, competing in the Premier League Darts is the ultimate dream. According to Dirk van Duijvenbode, he was close to achieving that milestone - until injury setbacks likely derailed his chances. Now, former pro Vincent van der Voort has added fuel to the debate, arguing that Van Duijvenbode’s energy and competitive fire would bring much-needed excitement to the Premier League lineup.
Van Duijvenbode has made remarkable strides in the world rankings in recent years. However, his progress was halted by persistent shoulder problems, preventing him from performing at his usual level. Had it not been for those injuries, he believes he might have secured a spot in the prestigious Premier League Darts lineup.
"In my injury year (2024), I was really close," he revealed in the Darts Draait Door podcast. "The PDC even asked me to come to Ahoy for an on-stage interview. It felt like they were preparing me for something. Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but when they start introducing you to that kind of stage, it means something. In the end, though, I was still far from making it because my season took a different turn."
His injury woes persisted for a long time, but now, he finally sees a glimmer of hope. "For now, my only goal is to stay in the world's top 32," he admitted, maintaining a realistic outlook on his career.
Former professional darts player Vincent van der Voort is one of those who firmly believes Van Duijvenbode deserved a spot in the Premier League. "Compared to some of the players in it now, I’d much rather watch Dirk. There’s always something happening when he plays," Van der Voort stated.
"Some players just show up and act like the perfect son-in-law, but that doesn’t bring much excitement. There are too many Littler fanboys right now, so it would be great to see Dirk in the mix. He steps up to compete against him and does everything to win."
Van der Voort also pointed out how some players, like Stephen Bunting and Nathan Aspinall, are overly friendly with the young world champion Luke Littler. "Every little thing, they’re giving him fist bumps or smiles. Dirk wouldn’t do that - just like he didn’t at the UK Open. Aubergenius wasn’t in the tournament this year, but in previous years, he definitely would have been."
For now, Van Duijvenbode remains focused on regaining his top form. Whether that leads to a future Premier League appearance remains to be seen, but one thing is certain - when he plays, he brings a level of intensity that keeps fans on the edge of their seats.
