Last Thursday, the 2026 Premier League Darts got underway. On the opening night at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, the weekly title went to Michael van Gerwen, who proved too strong for his compatriot Gian van Veen in the final with a 6-4 win.
The 2026 Premier League Darts once again consists of sixteen league nights. The top four in the standings then contest the Play-Offs in week seventeen at London’s O2 Arena to decide who succeeds Luke Humphries as overall champion and takes home the £350,000 top prize.
Just like Premier League Darts, there is of course also a Premier League in football. The English competition is globally regarded as one of the best leagues in the world.
But what if you had to match Premier League football clubs to Premier League darters? Former Premier League participant Wayne Mardle, now active as an analyst and commentator, for Sky Sports, was handed that task.

“Luke Humphries is Arsenal... because they'll finish 2nd”

Mardle was given a football club each time and had to say which Premier League darter he most associates with that club. That produced some notable choices.
First up for Mardle was Arsenal. “I don't like Arsenal,” says the Tottenham Hotspur fan. "Luke Humphries is Arsenal... because they'll finish 2nd,” Mardle then added with a cheeky smile.
He doesn’t have to think long about Manchester City either: “Luke Littler,” he says with conviction.

Mardle hesitates for a moment with Liverpool. “Stephen Bunting," is his initial response before a flicker of doubt makes Mardle change his mind and select Gerwyn Price.
For Newcastle United, Mardle again thinks of a Dutchman: “Michael van Gerwen really fits there. And Van Veen at Aston Villa.”
With two clubs left, one player will be left without a team, and that ends up being Bunting. Mardle pairs Josh Rock with Chelsea and Jonny Clayton with Brentford.
