Lewy Williams will battle to save his Tour Card at the end of this year but it was nearly a different career for the newly crowned 'Prince of Wales' taking the moniker from Richie Burnett.
Williams spoke to Phil Lanning for his management ZXF about previously being a barber and how at one point he juggled both when he got his Tour Card.
“I was in my last year of school and I really didn’t know what to do. I spoke to my dad about it and I went down to my local barbers and started an apprenticeship," said Williams as per ZXF Sports Management.
“I went from Swansea and moved up to Liverpool and did my level two and level three in college up there.
“But I then started darts at about 17 or 18, I was still working at the barbers and got my tour card. My tutor was really flexible and allowed me time to travel away for darts. Now I just focus on my darts.”
With being part of the boom period of Welsh darts, there is of course talk of potential added pressure but it spurs Williams on more than anything.
“I don’t think it’s extra pressure, it’s good for the youngsters in Wales watching Jonny and Gezzy, they are great ambassadors for the sport.
“It’s gives me a lot of confidence because if they can do it, so can I.
“They have their rugby background, I’ve come from football so it’s a similar thing.
“I used to play for Cardiff from about five-years-old until I was 15. I started off as a striker and ended up centre half.
But now the battle begins to save his Tour Card and the Development Tour could of course help with that as a result of winning a title earlier in the year.
“It’s been a bit up and down this year, I started off OK. The first few ProTours I got last 16 or quarters," he continued.
“Then I had a bit of a dip in form to be honest. My confidence went a bit low.
“But these last couple of months, I’ve picked up a bit better. I’ve been practising four hours every day. I’ve got my head into it.
“I’ve got a Euro Tour this weekend, I got my first PDC Development Tour win a few weeks ago, so it’s looking up again.
“It was nice to get over the line in the Development Tour win. I’d missed darts before to win one. I missed a few darts to win 5-2 and I was hoping I wasn’t going to blow it.
“It was so much relief to finally get the win. That gave me a massive boost of confidence for the next day and I’ve felt great since then really.”
