MVG shirt fetches £300 in charity silent auction at World Matchplay

The world champion beat Steve Beaton before falling at the hands of Glen Durrant in the second round. While dreams of a third World Matchplay title went awry, van Gerwen had some success in raising money for a good cause.

A stall in a side-hall at the Winter Gardens was set up to raise money for the Marie Curie cancer charity. Van Gerwen donated his worn match shirt from the win over Beaton for use in a silent auction.

Tournament attendees could put down bids on the shirt up until its conclusion.

In the end, Mighty Mike's shirt raised a total of £300 for the charity drive.

It isn't the first time that van Gerwen has made a contribution to good causes. In November 2017, the Dutch star sold off match-worn merchandise in a silent auction for Children in Need.

A few months later, the three-time world champion pledged to donate £100 for every 180 hit in the 2018 Premier League Darts. He ended up striking a maximum 72 times. His pledge, matched by Premier League Darts sponsors Unibet, led to £14,400 being raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
