Beaton on opening round win over Van Barneveld: ‘Even though it was a bit edgy I took my chances to win it which is pleasing’

Steve Beaton edged out Raymond van Barneveld on the opening night of action at the European Darts Open.
Barney has been on a bit of a resurgence as of late but this was halted by the fellow former World Champion. He spoke afterwards and admitted you can’t get a tougher draw so he’s delighted. "You can't get a much tougher draw than Raymond in the first round so I'm delighted to get the win," said Beaton. "But I always say you have to play the best to be the best in darts and even though it was a bit edgy I took my chances to win it which is pleasing. "Against Rob I know I will have to play a lot better and take my chances again when I get them."

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
