Over the past few days, Gian van Veen has once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the most promising young talents on the PDC circuit. 'GVV The Giant' had long been knocking on the door for his first senior title, and on Wednesday, he finally broke through.
For some time now, Van Veen has been one of the most consistent players on the PDC Tour. The 22-year-old Dutchman from Poederoijen often found himself on the wrong end of tight encounters, facing opponents who managed to outplay him despite his strong performances. A perfect example came last weekend at the Belgian Darts Open, where Van Veen posted an impressive 105 average in the second round. Unfortunately for him, Gerwyn Price produced a stunning 112 average, eliminating the Dutchman with a 6-2 victory.
On Tuesday, Van Veen delivered a spectacular performance at Players Championship 5, where he defeated both Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler. However, his tournament ended in heartbreak as he let a 7-4 lead slip in the final against Joe Cullen, missing six match darts and ultimately losing 8-7. It was his fourth opportunity to claim a PDC ranking title, but once again, victory eluded him.
Van Veen did not have to wait long for another chance, as Players Championship 6 took place the following day. This time, the former European Championship semi-finalist reached the final once more, where he faced the world number one, Luke Humphries. Unlike the previous day, Van Veen made no mistake, delivering an outstanding performance to secure an 8-3 victory and claim his maiden PDC ranking title.
His triumph earned him a substantial £25,000 in ranking money over two days, bringing his total earnings for the season to £52,000. Only Luke Littler, Humphries, Jonny Clayton, and James Wade have accumulated more prize money than Van Veen in 2025 so far.
When it comes to seasonal averages, Van Veen ranks even higher. He has played 36 official matches this year and has recorded a remarkable season average of 99.44. The only player with a higher average is Littler, who, having played 49 matches largely due to his Premier League commitments, boasts an average of 102.11.
Their win percentages are also close. Van Veen has won 27 of his 36 matches, giving him a win rate of 75 percent. Littler, on the other hand, has claimed victory in 39 of his 49 games, registering a win percentage of 79.59 percent. In between them, Humphries maintains a 76.19 percent win rate, with 32 wins from 42 matches.
Currently, Van Veen sits atop the Players Championship Order of Merit and has climbed to 24th place in the PDC world rankings. Given his current form and results, it seems only a matter of time before he joins fellow Dutchmen Michael van Gerwen and Danny Noppert in the top 16 of the PDC Order of Merit.
