Luke Littler is on the verge of reaching a milestone in darts history. With twelve major titles in just two years, the 19-year-old world champion is closing in on the three-million-pound mark in prize money on the two-year ranking, an outright record in the sport. Littler currently sits at £2,961,000 on the
Order of Merit, an impressive lead of £1,754,500 over his nearest rival, Luke Humphries.
The speed at which Littler is racking up success is unprecedented. He already has back-to-back world championships to his name and looks set to mount a challenge to darts legend
Phil Taylor’s record of 16 world titles. His name has become synonymous with dominance and youthful talent, but as his star power rises, questions are also emerging about what the future holds.
“How strong is his motivation?”
Former world champion
Scott Mitchell recently shared his thoughts on the matter. According to Mitchell, Littler’s biggest challenge in the coming years may not be found on the scoreboard, but in his own motivation. “I think the biggest thing that’s going to impact on Littler’s dominance is how much money he wants,” said Mitchell on the All About the Darts podcast. “How much money does he need to live, or how much money do you earn to keep your hunger to want to keep winning?"
Mitchell compares Littler’s situation to his own career: “There has to be a motivation at some point or another. For the likes of myself, there was never enough money around for us to say. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in a better position in life now than before in my darting career by a long shot. But I’m not in a position to be going and buying Porsches and Ferraris where Luke is."
“For Phil Taylor, money was never the goal”
He stressed that Littler’s motivation will be crucial. “You don’t have to buy them when you get that good, they give them to you. But the fact of the matter is, I think, could he win 16 world titles? I think he’s now saying: well, I’m two closer than I was two years ago. I’m on two and can I catch him. Will he have the hunger? For Phil, the money was never the issue, it was always the title, always the accolade that he liked. If Luke [Littler] can stay like that, I think he can stay in the game an awful long time.”
Mitchell’s remarks cast an interesting light on the Littler phenomenon. While the youngster has financially achieved nearly everything a darter could dream of, the question is whether he can maintain the same insatiable hunger that defined legends like Taylor. Some see this as a test of character: can a player who is young, wealthy, and successful at the same time keep the drive to make history?
Luke Littler won two world titles by the age of 19
What makes Littler so impressive so far is not just his talent, but also his ability to perform under pressure on the biggest stage. With two world titles secured before his twentieth birthday, he shows that age does not have to be a barrier to exceptional success.
Fans and experts are following his career with anticipation, as every victory brings him closer to breaking records long considered untouchable.
