A new chapter has been written in the PDC
Pro Tour record books. During the seventh
Players Championship event, a historic number of 180s was recorded.
At
Players Championship 7, the magical barrier of 600 maximums was broken for the first time. This officially makes the tournament the new record holder for the highest number of 180s in a single day of play.
The feat once again underscores how much the standard within professional darts has risen in recent years. While previous records had edged towards 600, that threshold remained untouched for a long time. Until now. Players seem increasingly consistent on the treble and are racking up heavy scoring at a blistering pace.
The previous record was set last year, when
Players Championship 2 produced no fewer than 596 180s.
Ryan Searle won the seventh Players Championship, where history was made
The match format at Players Championship events also plays a part. With a large number of matches packed into one day and many short-format ties, players have ample opportunity to showcase their scoring power. Especially when the form is there, 180s can pile up rapidly.
Breaking the 600 mark appears to have set a new benchmark. The question now is how long it will take before this barrier is pushed again. One thing is certain: the appetite for more records and even more spectacular darts is bigger than ever.
Yesterday, the eighth Players Championship was won by Wessel Nijman, who proved too strong for Joe Cullen in the final with an 8-4 victory. The Players Championship now takes a two-week break before resuming in Wigan with the ninth event on Monday, April 13th.
