The English darter
James Wade has once again drawn attention at the
Players Championship, but this time not only for his performance on the board. During the eighth
Players Championship event, “The Machine” created a striking moment when he visibly bristled at a squeaking oche, and that came with an unfiltered remark.
Distracting noise from the floor
Wade, still a mainstay among the world’s elite, recorded a convincing 6-2 win over Tommy Morris in the first round of the
eighth Players Championship of the season on Tuesday. At first glance there seemed little amiss, but after the match the talk wasn’t just about his game. The experienced Englishman approached the referee with a clear complaint: the oche floor made a distracting sound with every step.
“It’s squeaking like f***,” Wade blurted out, then repeatedly walked demonstratively back and forth across the oche to highlight the problem. The frustration was plain to see. “Is it because I’m not approaching it properly?” he wondered aloud, looking for an explanation for the annoying noise.
The referee tried to calm things down and advised Wade to stick to his normal routine. “Do what you’d normally do,” he was told, while it was promised the issue would be raised with the organizers. Wade indicated he had even tried to work around it: “I tried avoiding it, but…”
Historic achievement
Although the incident caused a stir, it was only a footnote in a period when Wade was making sporting history. A day earlier, at Players Championship 7, he reached a unique milestone: he became the
first player ever to win 1,000 matches at Players Championship events.
That historic victory came via a convincing 6-1 win. With that feat, Wade once again underlined his immense consistency and long career at the top of the darts world. While many players come and go, Wade has been a constant for years.
His success story did not get a perfect sequel, though. Later in the day he had to bow to Cristo Reyes, which meant a tournament win eluded him. Nevertheless, Wade mainly felt pride.
There was no title for Wade at the eighth Players Championship either. After his aforementioned win over Morris, he also beat Brendan Dolan in the second round. In the third round, however, Wesley Plaisier proved too strong for the Englishman with a 6-4 victory.
