During the 2026
PDC World Darts Championship at the iconic Alexandra Palace,
David Munyua not only represented his country Kenya, but also took an important step for the development of the sport in his home region. The Kenyan darter was recently given special recognition by Governor Irungu Kang’ata, who personally invited him to his office to congratulate him on his achievements on the world stage.
Munyua produced a massive upset in the middle of last month at the World Darts Championship by defeating Mike De Decker 3-2 in the opening round. That performance resonated strongly back home. Munyua was even received by the governor.
“I felt hugely honored”
For Munyua, the visit meant more than a symbolic moment. “I would like to sincerely thank His Excellency Governor Irungu Kang'ata of Murang'a County for inviting me to his office and congratulating me on my representative performance at the Ally Pally,"
he wrote in a post to Instagram. "I am truly honored by the recognition and encouragement."
According to Munyua, the governor showed genuine interest in the sport. “I'm especially grateful for his genuine interest in the sport of darts and his commitment to supporting its growth in Murang'a County," Munyua continued. "His promise to be a key supporter of darts gives us renewed motivation to grow the game, strengthen grassroots development, and take the sport to new heights within the county."
The focus is firmly on the grassroots. Development at the grassroots is essential to make structural progress, according to Munyua. “We look forward to his continued support, particularly as we work towards the registration of a Murang'a KDA branch, which will play a vital role in nurturing local talent and expanding opportunities for players."

Regional branch must play a key role
The next step is the establishment and official registration of a Murang’a branch within the Kenya Darts Association (KDA). That regional branch is set to play a key role in identifying and nurturing talent.
Finally, the darter expresses his gratitude for the trust he’s receiving. “Thank you, Your Excellency, for believing in the sport and in our journey," Munyua concludes.
