Dave Chisnall and
Peter Wright have become the first two men through to the semi-finals at the 2024
German Darts Championship in Hildesheim this Sunday evening.
In the first quarter-final of the night, 'Chizzy' faced off against the last remaining German hope,
Martin Schindler, and as such, the Englishman also had the crowd against him for much of the encounter also. Nevertheless, averaging 98.64 and hitting seven 180s, Chisnall edged a thriller in the deciding leg.
For a long while though, it didn't look like being such a close contest. Chisnall started by far the stronger of the two players, racing into an early 4-1 lead with a series of 15 darters. After Schindler missed a few chances to make it 4-2, Chizzy then moved 5-1 clear. Fired on by the Hildesheim crowd however, Schindler wasn't giving up without a fight and masterfully upped his own level to get back to 5-5 and force a deciding leg, surviving multiple match dart misses from Chisnall in the process. In the 11th and final leg however, the Englishman finally struck the killer blow, taking out a sensational 118 checkout, just moments after Schindler had missed bull for the match himself.
In the semi-finals, Chisnall will take on Peter Wright after Snakebite took victory in what was probably the tie of the round against
Michael van Gerwen.
In a high quality opening two legs, Van Gerwen was averaging a touch over 111 but had been denied even a shot at double by the equally brilliant Wright. As Van Gerwen upped his average even higher, to around the 115 mark though, the Dutchman wasn't going to be denied much longer and with legs of 12, 11 and 14, nudged in front himself at 3-2. An 18 darter then made it 4-2 to Van Gerwen.
Wright though, hadn't dropped off massively and regathering himself, the Scot bounced back to level terms at 4-4 with a stunning 161 checkout. With an 11-darter following, Wright was then suddenly back in front and just one away from the match. Sealing double 10 in the very next leg, Wright's victory was complete.
