On Thursday it is time for the fourth round of play of the Premier League Darts 2025 in Exeter, England. This playing city has a long history within the league and has traditionally been the venue where the darters take office just before the UK Open. After trips to Belfast, Glasgow and Dublin, the Premier League will now be played on English soil for the first time this season.
Exeter debuted as a Premier League playing city in 2009 and has maintained a permanent place on the calendar ever since.

Over the years, the Westpoint Arena has hosted numerous memorable matches, including, in terms of combined average, the best televised match of all time. During the 2019 Premier League Darts, thanks to an average of 119.50, Peter Wright won 7-2 over Adrian Lewis, who in turn posted a monthly average of 109.15. Together, they thus came to a combined average of 228.65, a world record. Last year Nathan Aspinall won the weekly title in Exeter after beating Rob Cross in the final.
A duel between two former world champions. It is the 42nd meeting between Michael van Gerwen and Rob Cross. The Dutchman leads the mutual balance 29-12, but remarkably, Cross managed to win five of the last six matches. 'Voltage' beat Van Gerwen twice at the World Series tournament in June 2024, and also won three of the last four clashes in the Premier League Darts last year.
For Van Gerwen, however, there are also two positive leads. Since the introduction of the current format, Van Gerwen always managed to take the weekly title in the fourth round of Premier League Darts play. In 2022, he did so in Exeter, and the past two years in Dublin and Newcastle, respectively. Another positive aspect is that Van Gerwen has not lost his opening match once yet this Premier League. On the other hand, however, he also failed three times in the semifinals, which means 'Mighty Mike' is still looking for his first final of the season. Cross made it to the semifinals during the first week of play, but then lost his opening match twice in a row.
For the second week in a row, Gerwyn Price and Luke Humphries face each other in Premier League Darts. Last week, the Welshman finally managed to end a run of five defeats against Humphries by beating him in the semifinals and eventually taking the weekly title in Dublin. Exeter is traditionally not good ground for Price: he managed to avoid losing here only once, and that was in 2019 with a draw against Humphries, who was playing as a contender at the time.
Humphries has yet to lose a first match this season, but his performances are dwindling by round of play: a tournament win, followed by a lost final and then a semifinal. It is not to be hoped for "Cool Hand Luke" that this trend continues, because then he will go off against Price. Humphries will be able to even the odds between the two players, as it is 10-9 for the Welshman in the head-to-head.
An important duel for both players. Both Chris Dobey and Nathan Aspinall are on three points in the rankings. A win will therefore put a direct competitor two points behind, and also keep the connection with the top four in sight.
Aspinall has a clear lead in the matches between them at 8-3 and has also won the last four meetings. Last week, he secured his first points by reaching the final in Dublin. Dobey will be looking to regain his form from Belfast, where he won the first round of play. In the two subsequent rounds of play in Glasgow and Dublin, 'Hollywood' was eliminated in his first match each time. Aspinall will have fond memories of the Westpoint Arena in Exeter, as that is where 'The Asp' won the weekly title last year after victories over Peter Wright (6-4), Luke Humphries (6-5) and Rob Cross (6-2).
The pressure in this match will be mainly on Stephen Bunting. He is the only player who is still scoreless and has great difficulty in creating and, above all, cashing in on chances on the doubles. Only 9 of his 28 chances at a double he managed to exploit. Exactly his upcoming opponent Luke Littler is the player who had the second least number of darts at the double. However, "The Nuke" did manage to hit 27 of the 54 darts on the outer ring into the right double, a finishing percentage of 50 percent.
This Premier League season, for now, is all or nothing for the reigning world champion. He won in Glasgow, but lost in Belfast and Dublin directly in the first round. He does have the highest tournament average of any competitor with 104.75. In the mutual balance between Bunting and Littler it is 2-2, with the most recent encounter being a 7-6 win for Bunting at the Dutch Darts Masters.
A unique aspect of the Premier League is that a separate tournament is played each week of play, with the winner receiving an additional £10,000. This means that a player who manages to win multiple weeks of play can boost his prize money considerably. Since the league lasts for 16 weeks, an additional total of £160,000 can be distributed to the winners of these nights of play.
With performances, players also earn points toward the Premier League standings. The winner of a weekly tournament receives five points, while the losing finalist takes home three points. Semi-finalists keep two points and players who lose their opening match go home scoreless.
