After visits to Dublin and Belfast in recent weeks, the 2024 Premier League Darts returns within English shores this week. Thursday night's playing venue is based in Manchester.
We are getting closer and closer to the end of the regular competition. After nine rounds of play, Luke Humphries is the proud leader with 22 points. 'Cool Hand Luke' needs another point or eight to assure himself of the playoffs. In Manchester, Humphries will take on Michael Smith, who is currently fifth with thirteen points.
Behind Humphries are Luke Littler (18 points) and Michael van Gerwen (17 points) in second and third place, respectively. They face each other Thursday night, and both need a win to keep Humphries from slipping further out of sight. It will be the seventh meeting of the season between Littler and Van Gerwen. Both managed to win three of the previous six encounters. The last two encounters, however, were victorious for Littler.
In the first match of the evening, Nathan Aspinall and Rob Cross will cross swords. Aspinall has been in strong form in the Premier League in recent weeks. In the past six weeks he reached the final four times, Cross on the other hand has not won in the Premier League for three weeks in a row.
The final quarterfinal of this round of play is between Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright, two players for whom it is slowly becoming make or break. Wright is now on four points, but still faces a 12-point deficit on a place in the top four. 'Snakebite' needs to start winning weekly titles soon to retain another theoretical chance. The same is true to a lesser extent for Gerwyn Price, who has only accumulated seven points. 'The Iceman' is not playing badly in this Premier League, but the results are not falling his way. Perhaps the Welshman can turn the tide in Manchester?
