On Sunday evening, the 2025 WDF Scottish Open came to a dramatic conclusion, with Lorraine Hyde and Christian Perez taking the senior titles.

New World Number 3 Lorraine Hyde swept the weekend at the WDF Scottish Open, adding both the Classic and Open titles to her Doubles victory on Sunday night, culminating in an incredible 160 checkout in a last leg decider with opponent Irina Armstrong stranded on only 54. Finals night also included Filipino Christian Perez winning his first WDF title since dropping off of the PDC Pro Tour at the end of last year, and Englishman Martyn Turner adding a second title to his WDF collection, with titles also being won for youth prospects Taylor McGuckian and Taylor Field.

The night started with the finals from the Scottish Classic, after the initial rounds were played on Saturday (See report here). In the Men’s final, Martyn Turner won his second ranking title by beating home hero Stuart Wares 5-3, averaging 85.09. ‘The Mutts Nuts’ broke Wares’ throw in the first leg and again in the fifth, and never looked back on his way to his first ranking title since his Welsh Open win in 2022. In the Women’s Final, Julie Thompson struggled in her first WDF final, and Lorraine Hyde always seemed to be a dart ahead of the Englishwoman, running out eventual 5-2 winner with an impressive 72.95 average.

In the youth finals, it was a great day for English players called Taylor as messrs McGuckian and Field swift-ly (sorry) dismissed their opponents to win the Boy’s and Girl’s events respectively. McGuckian took apart the highly fancied Scottish hope Luke Rossi, in a game in which both players played far from their best. It was a scrappy encounter, in which both missed chances throughout, but McGuckian was a deserving winner and took home his first of surely many WDF boy’s titles. In the Girl’s event, and Taylor Field got revenge on Jessica Matheson, who she had lost to in the group stage, as the 14 year old averaged 50.70 checked 114 to take a well earned victory and consign Matheson to the runners up spot, despite running the card in the group stages.

The finals day then continued with the Men’s and Women’s Scottish Open, and the Women’s event was run with relatively little in the way of surprises. Lorraine Hyde and German Irina Armstrong established themselves as the best players of the day from early on, with Sophie McKinlay, one of the pre-tournament favourites, finally coming good after a tricky weekend so far with a run to the semi-finals.

Thai player Phonsawan Whillis also had an impressive run, including knocking out Classic finalist Julie Thompson in the last 16, whilst Paula Jacklin’s impressive renaissance continued, with a good stretch to the last 16 with some decent numbers before eventually falling to Chloe O’Brien. Hyde and Armstong, however, were deserving finalists, with both posting the highest averages of the tournament, and put on an excellent show for the Renfrew crowd, with Armstrong coming from 4-0 down to force a deciding leg at 4-4. With Armstrong on 54, Hyde did the unthinkable and took out 160 to win the match and the title, capping off a fantastic weekend for the Aberdonian seeing her move up two ranking spots to world number 3.

The Men’s event was equally as thrilling, with former Tour Card holder Christian Perez winning his first WDF title in 6 years and beating Ryan Hogarth in the final to deny the Scotsman a second victory in the WDF system. Perez more than made up for an underwhelming run at the Classic and posted averages of 105, 100 and 97 en route to the title, as he seeks to recover from losing his PDC Tour Card at the end of last year.

Reigning champion Gary Robson was knocked out in the last 128 at the Classic on Saturday and his title defence came to an end in the last 16 in the Open, losing in a deciding leg to another former Tour Card holder in Carl Wilkinson, whilst it continued to be a great day for Aberdonian darters with Scotland captain Scott Campbell reaching the semi finals of the event, beating newly crowned Classic champion Turner and both former Lakeside World champion Neil Duff and ‘Duffman’s Doubles partner Jim McEwan before losing to Perez.

The final itself was a fairly one sided affair, and whilst Hogarth gave a good account of himself after a difficult, and controversial Lakeside campaign last year, he found himself a consistent darts behind the Filipino throughout the match and 96 in 2 darts was enough to secure Perez the title and with that, boost both confidence after a difficult 2024, and the chances of us seeing him at Lakeside come December.
