Glen Durrant is about to embark on his
Premier League Darts title defence but admitted in the run up to the tournament that his niece, Zara being stationed out in the Falklands Islands puts his poor form in perspective.
Durrant is very proud of Zara who is a logistics mover for the RAF (Royal Air Force) and is currently 8,000 miles away and how in reality, there are bigger battles to face than on a dartboard.
“My niece Zara is out in the Falklands. We are all very proud of what she is doing. She is passing through but it’s months rather than days or weeks," said Durrant to
The Sun.
“Zara represents that old cliche, she is from a council estate in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, but has done really well for herself. She has made a massive commitment. She has three children, who are with their father right now. Thank God for technology to talk to each other."
“It must have been a really tough decision when you sign up for your country. You have to make tough decisions. I understand she will be home soon. She sent me videos of the penguins she met. I thought that was hilarious.
“There were a few jokes flying around about them being my latest fans. I follow her career just as much as she follows mine. She’s one of my biggest supporters.
“100% it puts things into perspective on the dartboard. Like why do I beat myself if I have hit a big five?
“Why do I beat myself when I have family members who are being furloughed or family members out in the Falklands who aren’t seeing their kids?
“I suppose that’s a winners’ mentality but sometimes you need reminding there are bigger fish out there.”
