Gian van Veen had little trouble with compatriot Chris Landman in the first round at the
Players Championship Finals as the high flying Dutchman and
Damon Heta recorded early wins in Minehead.
It was the doubles that were the deciding factor in this match. Landman missed some small chances, while Van Veen recorded a 75 percent finishing percentage. He hit checkouts of 41 and 78 to win the first two legs. Landman then came back with a 72 check-out, before Van Veen hit 45 and 65 to extend the lead to 4-1. Van Veen then closed it out with a 13-darter and an 80 finish.
On the other stage, at the same time, there was a Belgian clash between
Mario Vandenbogaerde and Mike de Decker. That match was not exciting either. Thanks to a finishing percentage of 60 percent, Vandenbogaerde managed to win 6-1 over De Decker.
Heta like alluded to sealed victory also before Van Veen as he took on Jules van Dongen in a highly anticipated tie due to the form of the latter and also 'The Heat's run at the Grand Slam of Darts. But in truth, Van Dongen failed on the scoring against Damon Heta, the number three seed. The Australian prevailed 6-1 against Van Dongen, who can now prepare for his debut at the World Darts Championship in December.
Ryan Joyce qualified for the second round of the prestigious tournament in Minehead at the expense of Daniel Klose. Including a 106 finish, 12-darter and two 14-darters, Joyce took a 5-1 lead. Klose still came back to 5-3, before Joyce ended the match with a 20-darter.
