PREMLGE ABERDEEN GROUP1

It's a pivotal night of Premier League Darts action on Night Fourteen.

We've well and truly hit the final straight now. There are three games to go of the Premier League Darts group phase; of the eight players still competing, only one has said their farewells to any hope of reaching the play-offs. That man is Daryl Gurney, who lost his eighth game of the season against Gary Anderson. Gerwyn Price absolutely has to make it nine for Superchin. The Iceman is one point outside of the play-offs right now, but that could change dramatically over the course of the night.
Another player whose hopes are firmly in the balance is Michael Smith. Had he turned a 7-2 lead against Glen Durrant into a win, the Bully Boy would sit alongside Gerwyn Price on 13 points. Instead, he's a point off Price, and two off the play-offs. Considering how tight the race is right now, that could be crucial. Gary Anderson looks all set for another Premier League Darts play-off appearance. If the Scot recreates that mesmerising 109 average in the win over Smith nine days ago, he'll essentially book his ticket. This might be the most darts Anderson has ever played in this short a period, and the momentum's doing wonders for his game.

The heir against the King

Is Peter Wright's win over Michael van Gerwen the best thing that's ever happened to the Premier League Darts? Think about it. Mighty Mike won't have his annual group stage win. The play-off race is the most intense it's ever been. Wright himself could well undo the heartbreak of a couple of years ago. Right now, there simply isn't anyone playing better than him. He'll face a major battle against Nathan Aspinall. It was good to hear the Asp defending himself against suggestions that his race was run - his dip out of the playoffs was never really terminal, but victory over Gerwyn Price has set him up nicely for a late run at the top four.
Michael van Gerwen's previous Premier League Darts group stage finishes read as follows: first, first, first, first, first, first, first. A seventh is now essentially impossible. In fact, a play-off spot is in some doubt. In a 8-1 schooling at the hands of Peter Wright, the world number one fidgeted, fussed and muttered his way through a horribly uncomfortable evening. It doesn't get any easier, as he takes on a man who beat him easily last Wednesday. Glen Durrant has stolen his mantle as the table-topper, and with it comes the air of invincibility. The escape act to grab a draw against Michael Smith was more like Houdini at his pomp. Duzza, if he does his thing again, could bore MvG into a seriously precarious position - one that even the best player in the world can't bounce back from.
