Martin Adams and Richie Howson became the first two players to secure a spot in the last eight at World Seniors Matchplay in York, England on Friday afternoon.
Howson had relatively little trouble dealing with Trina Gulliver, one of the two female participants in this senior tournament. The Owl won 8-4 with an average of 87.63. Gulliver had an 81.69 average.
Early in the match, Gulliver still took a 3-2 lead, holding her own leg three times with an 18-darter. After Howson provided the equalizer with a 19-darter, Howson raced over. He turned the 2-3 deficit into a 6-3 lead, and after Gulliver took her fourth leg, Howson finished it off decisively.
Adams had a much harder time with Matt Clark, although that was also because neither Englishman played a good game. Adams threw 80.02 average, compared to 75.65 for Clark.
The following legs went with the darts, allowing Adams to throw for the match in the fourteenth leg at a score of 7-6. Clark could not take advantage of the fact that Adams was not out in six innings, after which 'Wolfie' managed to secure the victory with a 19-darter.
