The BDO players seem to have to play at the BDO World Chamionship for even less prize money than previously reported.
Chairman Des Jacklin
announced before the start of the tournament that he would make substantial cuts in the available prize fund. This was due to the lack of sponsors and a disappointing ticket sale.
The women's winner cheque went from £ 20,000 to £ 8,000 and the winner of the men's tournament only received £ 50,000 instead of the usual £ 100,000 reward.
However, there are now rumors that the amount is being further reduced. The men's winner would only receive £ 23,000 as a reward. According to participant
Martijn Kleermaker there is officially no clarity yet, he told RTL 7.
"I have heard messages about reducing the prize money even more, but nothing has been said to me by the board. If it has indeed been lowered even more, then you know that the BDO is slowly ending. It seems there is no money left and bills cannot be paid'', he added.
Chairman Jacklin
The players are also unable to gain clarity. BDO chairman Des Jacklin is hardly approachable. ''I think he's scared to face us, because we hardly see him in the players' room either. If you are chairman of the BDO and you organize the World Championship, you can expect that you would see him, but that's not the case.''
According to the 28-year-old Dutchman, Jacklin's credibility has run out. "He has no support from me and many with me. It seems to me to be an untenable situation," Kleermaker said.
