Michael van Gerwen took his 100th PDC singles title, and 102nd overall - but still wasn't happy.
Bar the 2014 and 2017 World Cup, every accolade the Dutchman has collected his been self-earned. Van Gerwen took home the top prize for the fifth time in 2018 by winning Players Championship 2 in Barnsley. He has lost just two games since the World Championships - against Michael Smith at UK Open Qualifying 3, and Peter Wright in the Premier League. His PC2 win came a day after picking up the £10,000 top prize at PC1.
It was a rollercoaster of a day for the Dutchman. Steve Lennon and Jamie Lewis were easily dispatched, but Ryan Searle and Luke Woodhouse took their games to the last leg. Woodhouse even missed four match darts, but van Gerwen survived. A 110 average against Adrian Lewis and an 87.5 average against Simon Stevenson both yielded 6-2 wins.
"I didn't have a good day, I played poorly, but I'm still really glad that I won to take tournament win number 102," he admitted.
Mighty Mike battered Corey Cadby 6-1 in the final. He had some kind words to say about the young Australian, following their first ever competitive meeting.
He said: "Every time I had a chance I took it and I didn't make a lot of mistakes.
"Corey is a very good player. I think he was trying too hard in the final, but I'm sure he can do some really good things in the future. With his quality, he could easily become a top ten player. He is a great talent and has a great throw."

- It happens. Remember, anyone who has watched German and Dutch players in matches - their respective countries will have seen/heard just as bad jeering (if not worse). Taylor and MVG are two prime examples of professionals who are able to cope with the crowds mentally and not take it personally. This is not just an English crowd problem, FFS.MrYnyslas197116-11-2024
- Was watching an old World Masters final the other day between Eric Bristow and John Lowe, the crowd respect for both players on throw was first class, not a sound. You can imagine now the idiots who were whistling on De Deckers throw proudly boasting about it on social media. I blame the PDC to a certain extent though doubt they really care as they win regardless of which player wins or loses.Mysstree16-11-2024
- @UndartedWaters I totally agree with your thoughts! I totally respect Kirk but in this instance I was disappointed with his lack of crowd control. I even turned to my husband and said "Could you imagine this happening if Russ Bray was the referee tonight? At least there would have been a crowd admonishment- Ladies and Gentleman please."
