Glen Durrant was in high spirits after making the perfect start to his Grand Slam campaign. BDO world champion Durrant beat
PDC world number two Peter Wright 5-2 at the Wolves Civic on Saturday.
"That's a perfect start for me and I'm delighted with that," the man from Middlesbrough told PDC TV. ‘Duzza’ was making a return to major tournaments, having spent the year focusing on exhibition play.
"I wasn't sure exactly where my game was at and this is a real opportunity to see where I am,” Durrant said. The 46 year-old averaged 106.05 in a commanding performance that featured a 127 checkout and three 180s.
"That's probably my highest average in a TV tournament and I felt good. I was controlled and I stayed calm, even though inside I was doing cartwheels,” Durrant said.
His next challenge comes against 2014 BDO world runner-up and current PDC number 15 Alan Norris. After that, youth world champion Corey Cadby awaits Durrant in the final round of group games. Durrant qualified from his group in 2016 before losing against Raymond van Barneveld in the second round.
