Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld fight back to claim maximum points in Wolverhampton

Michael van Gerwen like Phil Taylor before him survived a real scare to defeat Rob Cross 5-4. Cross played brilliantly including a blockbuster 170 checkout and averaged 104 in an excellent game but Van Gerwen being like he is should never be written off and came back to win from being 4-2 down. Once again Cross is denied an opportunity to beat Michael on a big stage after beating him in Leverkusen earlier this year in a Euro Tour but he is sure to topple 'Mighty Mike' soon.
A similar occurrence happened in the final game of the night, Raymond van Barneveld survived a real scare as well and was on the edge of defeat like his Dutch counterpart Michael van Gerwen and rival Phil Taylor. He came from 3-0 down to edge past the Iceman, Gerwyn Price 5-4. Like the men before him he turned it on when it really mattered and it means he moves to within touching distance of Round 2 at the Wolves Civic.

- Many fans had a sour taste in their mouth by the end of this match. Mike was cruising to victory, playing beautiful darts, when the whistling started in earnest, particularly on his doubles. You could see in Mike's face that it was really affecting his concentration. The referee should have asked for order, just to show that the whistling is unacceptable, and Luke Littler could also have done his part to quieten down the crowd instead of "taking full advantage.:" I put that down to his age though. He needs some good advice on this from his management team and/or more seasoned players. It's got to be about who's best on the night, not who is being harassed by the crowd. Luke Littler played well to get back into the game and win, but it was a hollow victory. If he goes on to win the tournament, that triumph too will be tainted because of this match.
