'Bully Boy'
Michael Smith started his
World Series of Darts campaign with a whitewash win over 'The Hurricane' Rob Szabo in a match that could of been a banana skin for the St-Helens Ace as Szabo is a previous World Championship qualifier and is a regular on the World Series Stage but there was no sympathy from Smith who demolished Szabo with an average of 104.
In the first leg, Smith got a 180 but missed 3 darts at D20 then 1 at D10 before clearing up at the next time of asking on the same double with Szabo way back to show that there was no nerves on the part of Smith.
On Szabo's throw, Smith put pressure on him with a second maximum and double top for an 11 darter to make it 2-0 and grab a break.
Smith averaging 115 got D10 following this to lay down a marker in the early going against the Kiwi ace.
Szabo struggled and Smith took advantage with his 4th maximum in 4 legs and also a 140 to leave 85 but he left D10 again and pinned it 3rd dart to go up 4-0.
Smith then pinned 58 (18, D20) 3rd dart on D10 averaging 108 to go 1 away at 5-0 and then finished it off pinning D3
Following the 'Bully Boy' was another darting star firmly on the rise in 'Superchin'
Daryl Gurney who was making his second appearance against qualifier Rob Modra who previously lost 6-5 to Gary Anderson in 2015.
Gurney started with a 103 checkout to break throw but Modra punished the four missed darts at double and executed a 102 checkout to make it 1-1.
Superchin picked out D16 to regain the lead at 2-1 and then picked out D4 for a 3-1 lead.
Gurney was coasting through with a second maximum and D6 to stretch his lead to 4-1 but due to missed doubles from 'Superchin', Modra came back and broke Gurney with a 60 finish.
Gurney broke back with a maximum and took out 96 to edge to 5-2 and one away from victory and took out 25 to take out 'The Remedy' 6-2.
