The Dutch duo formed a team for the first time at the World Cup of Darts. Van Gerwen and Wattimena gave Spain no chance and won five legs on the spin as debutant Wattimena kicked off with a 108 checkout in the first leg for an immediate break. However, the Dutch pair was not completely satisfied after their match.
''We both started badly'', Wattimena told
RTL 7. ''Luckily I was able to check out 108. I felt a bit of tension, but it was a healthy tension. It was gone quickly and I'm fortunate to have Michael behind me'', the World Cup debutant said.
''There is no reason to complain. Of course we made a few mistakes here and there, but it's still 5-0, that's very enjoyable. We have made paella of those Spaniards'', Van Gerwen joked.
The world number one was pleased with Wattimena after their first appearance together in the
PDC. ''I always put a lot of energy in matches and then there is someone who puts even more energy in matches, that's nice to see'', the 30-year-old added.
''We played so many tournaments together, especially when we were young. It's nice to stay here together.'' Netherlands will meet Poland in the second round on Saturday evening. ''That should be feasible, especially when you beat Spain 5-0''.
