With the win, the Quarter-Final line up has been confirmed in Wolverhampton with Van Gerwen averting an early exit. Smith went 3-1 up but was soon pegged back by Mighty Mike.
This did not discern Smith and until the end it was closely fought with it being basically leg for leg. Van Gerwen took a crucial break towards the end but in the fashion of the clash, ‘Bully Boy’ hit back.
Smith fluffed his lines at 8-7 down to potentially wrestle back control and he went two ahead. This proved a pivotal moment and MVG went on to win 10-8.
Overall though it was a classic with averages of 108 for the world number one and 100 for Smith. For the latter he will feel really unlucky not to see off the reigning champion.
