'The Wizard' did a great job on top of that. Whitlock remained almost flawless on his doubles and missed only one arrow to win a leg. The Australian decided the game with a score of 88 percent.
The former European Champion also scored the highest check-out of the first round. Whitlock threw 160 out in the eighth leg of his match against Mensur Suljovic. The current number eight in the world rankings won the match 7-5 against the Austrian. Rob Cross will be his opponent during the second round of play next Thursday.
Van Gerwen also showed a number of excellent check-outs last Thursday. Cross was then the opponent of the 28-year-old Dutchman and had to watch how the number one of the world managed to throw a 114 finish three times. His coming opponent, Peter Wright, was less keen on his doubles in Dublin. 'Snakebite' needed no less than 21 attempts to hit six doubles.
The second round of the Premier League Darts will be played in Cardiff. Michael Smith opens the evening session with a duel against Daryl Gurney. Gerwyn Price will compete against two-time world champion Gary Anderson in his own country. Raymond van Barneveld crosses the swords with Mensur Suljovic in the last game of the evening.
