John Part took a look back at the 2008 PDC World Championship during a recent feature on 'Darth Maple's career on Sky Sports.
Part claimed victory in 2008 but had an unlikely opponent in the final in Kirk Shepherd with Wayne Mardle losing out in a moment 'Hawaii 501' will be remembered for.
He spoke about that and admitted he thought Mardle awaited in the final and that it showed how you can go from a career defining moment on both ends from his Taylor win to Shepherd defeat.
"I thought it was going to be the epic that Wayne and I never did have against each other in a final. His greatest moment in darts history against Taylor was sadly followed - 24 hours later - by his worst one, probably," said Part to Sky Sports.
"I think a lot of guys underestimated Kirk and they got in tough spots with him. They felt funny and awkward, playing for the wrong reasons. These sort of pressures that come out of nowhere and they kill you.
"When I played Kirk in the final, I was thinking 'stay out in front and get it over with early because it's a long game'. I pretty much kept to my game plan so by the time he started winning sets it was pretty much done and dusted, so I survived."
