Defending champion
Gerwyn Price did not make a misstep in the first round of the
New Zealand Darts Masters. 'The Iceman' handled Simon Whitlock quite easily, beating him 6-1.
Whitlock got off to a promising start with a 104 finish in the first leg, taking a break lead. The Wizard failed to catch on and saw Price come alongside with a 92 finish and a 149 check-out. After that, Price was able to grab three legs in a row in six innings, increasing the lead to 5-1. The Welshman then closed the match beautifully with a 13-darter.
Nathan Aspinall played his first match in New Zealand since winning the World Matchplay in late July. 'The Asp' was somewhat disappointing with an average of 92 and a finishing percentage of 30 percent, but it was enough for a big win.
An 11-darter in the sixth leg was Aspinall's highlight, taking him to a 5-1 lead. Milne then took his second leg, before the Stockport ace joined the last eight with a 68 finish.
