Previously unknown Grant Sampson sent the first shockwave through the 2023
PDC World Darts Championship with his 3-1 victory over Keane Barry last night. Now the South African hopes to use this win as a launching pad for the future, "It'll help with accommodation and getting to Q-School."
Sampson, who had never played in front of more than 50 people before, admitted the Ally Pally crowd played a big factor in spurring him on to victory. "Crowd was awesome," he told Tungsten Tales. "Back home we only play in front of maybe 50 people so playing in front of a crowd like that was beautiful. I enjoyed every minute of it."
Sampson defeated Devon Petersen in the final of the South African qualifier to secure his spot at the World Championship with "the Samurai" as he's known, saying "all my dreams came true in that moment." Now after his victory over one of darts hottest young talents in Keane Barry, does Sampson believe he can continue this momentum in the next round against Kim Huybrechts?
"Kim is a brilliant player," he said. "If I can do what I do in the practice room and take it on stage, I'll give him a game."
