The World Grand Prix was a triumph for Luke Humphries. 'Cool Hand Luke' defeated Gerwyn Price 5-2 in the final for the first major title of his career.
Humphries also took over fourth place in the world rankings from Gerwyn Price with this first major title. Not so long ago we had the "big three" in darts with Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Price. Late last year Michael Smith joined them, who even became the new number one in the world thanks to winning the Grand Slam of Darts and the World Championship.
And so now Humphries joins the ranks of top players. Humphries' statistics promise even more success. The year Gerwyn Price became number one in the world, he had an average of 98.47. Humphries' annual average for now is 97.99.
Humphries has also performed tremendously consistently in recent years. The last two years he won a whopping 57 of his 72 matches on the European Tour, this year alone 30 of 39.
Moreover, Humphries himself indicated that he did not even approach his best level at the last World Grand Prix before the final. It leaves only the best hope for the still only 28-year-old Englishman to build a fine list of honors in the years to come.
