Michael van Gerwen is the man to beat still in the 2020 PDC World Championship with the World Number One in top form and he exhibited that again versus Stephen Bunting easing through in straight sets.
Van Gerwen spoke afterwards and said that he didn't need to play at his best due to Bunting not playing at his A game but the averages don't matter to him as long as he is still involved.
He also admitted that players are sweating about him more than he is sweating about the tournament and that he is looking forward to playing Steve Beaton and Darius Labanauskas especially with the format going up.
"I think I did well enough, I can't complain. There's more in the tank but I didn't need it because Stephen (Bunting) wasn't playing his A game. You could see that a lot but I got the win which was the most important thing," said Van Gerwen to LiveDarts at the press conference after his victory over Bunting.
"96 average, 105 average. Who cares as long as you win your game that is the most important thing. I think I made it as easy as possible and that's what counts."
"I think I break sweat more of the other players left in the tournament. Keep doing what your doing playing darts at the highest level as possible especially in this World Championship, you're not allowed to make mistakes. So far I'm not making any."
"As long as they keep talking about me it's good because it means I am still in the tournament. I think for both of them I have a fantastic record against so we're going to raise the format by one set so that's all in my favour but you still have to do it time after time."
