Tori Kewish will face off against top seed Deta Hedman in the second round at the 2022 WDF World Championship on Wednesday afternoon after seeing off her close friend, Lorraine Hyde on her
Lakeside debut surviving a mini comeback in the process.
Hyde took the early lead but a 180 from Kewish followed by 84 on the bull for the Aussie saw her hold to make it 1-1 with the Scot missing a chance to break.
The Scot continued to hold as she looked towards taking the first set with averages in the mid 70’s. A 140 checkout was missed on double 10 by Kewish but the Aussie returned with Hyde back on 157 and it was 2-2.
Kewish was against the throw in the decider, she missed 79 for the set but Hyde couldn’t pin 154 and 110 so the former returned to seal it on double two.
Kewish missed the chance to hold but Hyde missed double one to break and the Aussie broke at 1-0 up. A 180 and 68 checkout saw the Aussie go one away.
She missed two match darts and continued to miss chances to get over the line busting multiple times before Hyde hit double 10 to break back and prolong the tie.
Hyde missed 116 for the decider but with Kewish well back, she could only pressure and the former hit double 10 to send it all the way.
Kewish began with 140 and set up double 20 with another 140. She missed more match darts but finally pinned double five to get over the line.
While before that, Ian Jones returned after 14 years away from the Lakeside and ‘Whippet’ saw off a stalwart of the stage in Canada’s David Cameron in a 2-1 win averaging 78 in the process.
Jones claimed the opening leg on double 10 followed up with a 56 before sealing the opening set-in double-quick time. He missed 158 on double 19 and Cameron held throw on double 16.
Cameron doubled up with a 70 checkout to break before hitting double five after initially missing 128. Jones began the decider by having a chance to go one away but handed it back to Cameron who drew it level.
Cameron hit 72 on double 12 to go one away at 2-1. Jones sent it all the way though on double nine and was first to throw for the match hitting double five for the win.
While John Desreumaux wins on debut against Donovan Lottering with the Belgian admitting he was nervous afterwards but he swept through the out of sorts Aussie who averaged 65.
Desreumaux swept through the opening set with a 68 checkout for ‘Killerbee’ as he averaged more than ten ahead of his struggling opponent. A 180 and double 20 saw Desreumaux hold throw to begin the second set after a poor start.
He doubled his lead with a 56 checkout to break throw before hitting double three to finally get over the line against the out-of-sorts Aussie ace.
