First among them is Alex Steinbauer, who edged his way through the home nation qualifier. Last year, at the Austrian Darts Open, Steinbauer was pummeled 6-0 by Richie Burnett. It's lucky that, at the Austrian Darts Championship, he's not pitted against another player reinventing himself after a fall from grace which followed a meteoric rise to the top of the game. Oh, wait, he's got Kirk Shepherd. Never mind.
There's a tasty-looking game following that. Mark Webster puts down the microphone and picks up the darts as the part-time pundit takes on Dimitri van den Bergh. Luke Humphries wants to get to the quarter-finals in Vienna, at least. He's been landed with a devil of a first round match - Czech Darts Open champion Jamie Hughes wouldn't be regarded a pushover by anyone in the world.
Keegan Brown will be eyeing up a second round game against Nathan Aspinall, but first he has to see off homegrown ace Hannes Schnier. Then Chris Dobey plays Mike de Decker, and Rowby-John Rodriguez bids to match the heroics of brother Rusty-Jake when he does battle with Josh Payne.
Christian Gödl takes on Jeffrey de Zwaan with the aim of playing Darren Webster in round two, and then two heavyweights clash as Kyle Anderson measures up against Stephen Bunting. The winner of that game will surely prove tough competition for Michael van Gerwen on Saturday.
